An Ordinary Little Shot Glass
Tonight, I opened the cabinet to get a glass, and there it was. The Hollywood shot glass. It’s just an ordinary little shot glass with the word “Hollywood” on it. I have no idea where it came from. All I know is that Eric either brought it with him or someone gave it to him around the time we moved into our house in Kentucky in 1998.
For years, it sat on the counter of our double sink in the bathroom. It became the catch-all for findings, random body jewelry, bits and pieces of earrings, and whatever else ended up in it. At one point, it had collected so much gunk that I was completely disgusted, dumped everything out, and cleaned it. I didn’t do that often. It was just one of those things that was always there. Nothing special. Nothing meaningful. Just a little shot glass sitting on the bathroom counter, holding random things that didn’t seem to belong anywhere else.
Honestly, I don’t even remember it being in our house in Normal. I can’t picture it there at all. But somehow, it survived. It made it through all of the chaos. At some point, it even became an actual shot glass, which, by the way, was something I swore I would never do with it. Greg and I used it as a real shot glass in Logan Square. Ironic that after a few decades of collecting random bits and pieces of jewelry, it finally served its intended purpose.
Somehow, It Made It Here…

Sometimes the smallest, most ordinary things have a way of reminding us just how far we’ve come.
What began as a simple moment of opening a cabinet became an unexpected reflection on resilience, reinvention, and the parts of ourselves that survive everything life puts us through.
I’ve shared the rest of The Hollywood Shot Glass on Patreon, where the story continues.
